How can I dye my brown hair to have pieces of blonde in it?

When I say pieces, I mean the tips, streaks in the hair but not to the roots. And I'm trying to avoid having to go to the hairdresser and do it professionally. So, any ideas?How can I dye my brown hair to have pieces of blonde in it?
you can't go from having brown hair to blonde without bleaching it.
