How to home make sponges for the Victory Rolls hair style?

I really want to do the 40's style Victory Rolls for my prom this year but the only problem is that I dont have the sponges to roll them up with. Is there any way that I could home make them or anything else I could use instead of the sponges, maybe something I could get at Safeway or a store like it? PLEASE HELP!!!!
