Where is the hair for human hair extenions and human hair wigs obtained from?

Lately I have seen a lot of advertisements for human hair extensions. Paris Hilton and Jessica Simposon have their own line. Other brands are available in national chain drug stores.



It just seems like extremely large amount of human hair.



Does anyone know if is mixed female and male hair? Is it from adults or children? Who are these companies buying this hair from? How much money do the people selling their get?



I would like any answers to any of these questions.

Poor young women in Asia, Africa and South America sell their hair to buy food.
Some people give their hair for locks of love. I have a niece with leukemia and since she has lost her hair (she is 2), one of my other nieces wanted to give her hair to locks of love. You have to have hair that is so many inches long and I forget how long. Of course, that hair is donated for cancer patients. I suppose some places probably do the same with buying hair.
What ';poverty';? A person with a long hair comes to a salon and wants to cut them short. It then gets put in a ponytail and this ponytail gets cut off. These ponytails then being sold to a company that manufactures wigs and hairpieces for about $5 a piece or are being donated to a non-profit that makes wigs for cancer patients.
There are places that buy your hair,and from what I understand,you can make some decent money if you have the type of hair they are looking for. Most times it has to be a certain length and considered ';virgin'; hair,meaning it has never been dyed. The hair can come from a man or a woman,even from a child.

My son is growing his hair for locks of love. If I can remember right,the ponytail has to be at least 6 inches in order for them to use it. He has beautiful hair,wish mine was that nice..lol.
No one who has entered into a contract of their own free will has been exploited. Poor Asian women who sell their babies to Americans are not exploited. Prostitutes are not exploited. Just because you are in a better position to decline an offer does not make someone who isn't exploited.

It is bought because of its' thickness and strength, plus it can be bought very cheaply.

It is durable enough be made into extensions where as most caucasian hair isn't quite as strong or as readily available, and African hair is too curly.

Yes people are being exploited, I wonder if Ms Hilton or Simpson realise that they are wearing some poor Asian girls hair that she probably got 5 cents for!!

I'm in cosmetology school and people donate their hair through 'locks of love' and other organizations like that. the hair is sent to companies and boiled at a high level of heat to sanitize it and take all the natural build up of sebum ( the natural oil secreted by you hair follicles), they need to boiled the hair because sebum if found as deep as under the cuticle layer of the hair( the hair is made up of 3 layers the cuticle the cortex and the medulla) in doing this they usually destroy the cuticle layer and but a chemically made one on the boiled hair. After boiling the hair it becomes almost like a liquid and they string it through a machine that creates new hair strands. They then cut it and dye it the desired color. the process ends with sewing it into wigs or wefts for hair extensions. I hope this helped!
