How does thinning out your hair work?

Most people tell me i should thinning out my hair. I want to but i don't know what that means or what it REALLY does. My mom said you get it done at a salon. what exacly do they do to your hair and does it really work? How does thinning out your hair work?
Thinning out your hair is just layering it until it is less thick.

Some salons use the 'razor cutting' technique which they use to slice the ends off until it is 'thin enough'.How does thinning out your hair work?
they basically take a razor and kinda just scrape your hair until its thinner. it looks kinda cool cuz the ends of your hair end up looking really pointy and edgy, but i completely regret getting my hair thinned out 2 years ago. its like not the same :[ its so thin and theres hardly any volume to it anymooore
i just got mine thinned yesterday.

they'll be trimming your hair by pulling it with the scissors until it's super thin... but the hair on your head will still be pretty thick. only the lower part of your hair will be very much thinner. FYI, if you thin above shoulder-length, your hair will curl slightly, giving it this edgy 'spikes'. (i miss my super straight hair).

but i guess it's the 'IN' style at the moment. LOL. Have fun~
